Nowak protester jailed for three years
Leon O’Leary threw smoke grenade at police and had samurai sword at home after disorder in Southampton
An anti-police protester has been jailed for three years over disorder that followed Henry Nowak’s murder.
Leon O’Leary, 41, was part of a 1,000-strong protest that “shouted abuse and threw projectiles” at police on June 2 after Vickrum Digwa was convicted of murder.
O’Leary threw a smoke grenade at the police during the protest and, when he was later arrested, “took up a fighting stance” before being pepper-sprayed by the police.
He pleaded guilty to violent disorder, resisting a police officer and possession of an offensive weapon – he had a samurai sword in his bedroom – and was jailed for 37 months at Southampton Crown Court.
The disorder was prompted by accusations of two-tier policing, after bodycam footage was released that showed officers handcuffing Mr Nowak, 18, while he lay dying, after Digwa, a Sikh man, claimed he had been racially abused.
Digwa, 23, was jailed for life to serve a minimum of 21 years for the murder.
Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, described the killing as a watershed moment and demanded “pure cold rage” from the public.
