My school mate Roger's dad was a pilot on the Mersey. Quite a dangerous job, transferring to the and from
the ships in often heavy weather.
The approach to Liverpool for shipping is notoriously difficult, so much so that the pilot boats meet the ships way out near the coast of North Wales.
I often see the local pilot boats here escorting the ferries and the regular cement carriers going to and from Corsica.
