No, the FDA did not state that ivermectin cures COVID-19. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has consistently maintained that ivermectin is not authorized or approved to prevent or treat COVID-19 in humans or animals.
The FDA's Official Position
• No Proven Efficacy: Multiple high-quality, large-scale clinical trials reviewed by the FDA and independent scientists showed that ivermectin provides no clinical benefit or therapeutic role in treating COVID-19 symptoms or reducing hospitalizations. • Approved Uses: Ivermectin is only FDA-approved for specific, limited uses. In humans, oral tablets are prescribed for parasitic worms, and topical versions are approved for conditions like head lice and rosacea. • Safety Warnings: The FDA has actively warned the public against taking ivermectin for COVID-19, noting that large doses—especially formulations intended for horses or livestock—are highly dangerous to humans and can cause overdoses, seizures, coma, or death.
Clarification on Legal Statements
A common source of confusion stemmed from a 2023 federal lawsuit (Apter v. HHS), during which FDA lawyers clarified that the agency does not have the legal authority to ban doctors from prescribing approved human medications for "off-label" uses. However, acknowledging a physician's legal right to prescribe a drug off-label is not an endorsement of effectiveness. Both the FDA and major medical institutions, such as the American Medical Association (AMA), continue to strongly advise against using ivermectin for COVID-19 due to a lack of scientific evidence
