Living in a hurricane zone…..

It must be awful for you

Storm Austen triggers ‘danger to life’ warning
Met Office issues amber alert for south-west England as gusts of up to 80mph expected on Friday morning

Storm Austen has triggered an amber “danger to life” warning for winds of up to 80mph in parts of south-west England.

The Met Office said the first named storm of the season would also bring heavy rain on Friday, with travel disruption expected.

The amber warning is in place between 3am and 10am on Friday for Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly and Plymouth, where gusts of 60 to 70 mph will develop. They could reach 80mph in some exposed areas.

The Met Office said there may be spells of heavy rain, while the rest of Friday will remain windy, but gusts will gradually ease.

There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, the forecaster added, while some buildings could be damaged.

The danger to life will come from large waves and beach material being thrown on to coastal roads and sea fronts.

Elsewhere, a yellow warning for wind is in place for parts of the South East, South West, Wales and Herefordshire in the West Midlands between midnight and 2pm on Friday.

Strong winds are expected to spread across southern parts of England and Wales during Thursday night and into Friday, with gusts of 50 to 60mph likely and some exposed areas likely to see 70mph or more.
