Balaclava in French is 'Cagoule'.
'A balaclava to protect against tear gas? Another 20-year-old defendant was charged with taking part in a public assembly whilst concealing all or part of his face. When he was arrested at around 5.20 pm, he was wearing a yellow vest and a balaclava that almost completely concealed his features.
At the hearing, the young man explained that he had followed the advice of his friends, who had reportedly recommended that he cover his face ‘just in case’, particularly to protect himself from tear gas.
He also claimed to have left the main street as the situation escalated and that, at the time of his arrest, he was simply hoping to reach his car.
The defendant framed his presence in the context of social protests. Employed at a state-run care home, he said he had wanted to highlight the lack of resources in his sector, as well as the rising cost of living and fuel prices.
The Crown Prosecution Service, represented by Carla Perez, had sought 100 hours of community service to be completed within twelve months, with a three-month prison sentence in the event of non-compliance.
The court ultimately imposed a sentence of 60 daily fines of 15 euros, totalling 900 euros.
