Mandelson failed vetting – but was given job anyway
Foreign Office reportedly overrode security concerns to appoint disgraced peer as ambassador to US

Lord Mandelson reportedly failed security vetting but still became Sir Keir Starmer’s ambassador to the US after the decision was overruled.

The Prime Minister appointed Lord Mandelson at the end of 2024, before he had been vetted and despite knowing that he had maintained ties with Jeffrey Epstein after the financier was convicted of child sex offences.

The disgraced peer was denied clearance in January last year, but Foreign Office civil servants used exceptional powers to defy security officials and overrule the decision, according to The Guardian.

The revelations threaten a fresh political crisis for Sir Keir, whose premiership almost collapsed over the Mandelson scandal in February. They also raise questions about whether he has misled MPs and the public over the affair.

Last month, the first tranche of files relating to the appointment revealed that Jonathan Powell, Sir Keir’s own national security adviser, believed the appointment had been “weirdly rushed”.

Lord Mandelson was sacked in September last year after emails revealed the extent of his friendship with Epstein.

In February, he was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public over allegations that he leaked No 10 documents to Epstein while he was business secretary in Gordon Brown’s government. The peer, who remains under police investigation, denies any wrongdoing.
