The Nebra Sky Disc (c. 1800-1600 BC) Amazing discovery. 'Although there are older artefacts that probably are describing astronomical observations, this is apparently the oldest known "clear depiction of heavenly bodies" identified so far. In archaeology, "so far" is an important caveat that I feel often needs to be stressed. But, even if earlier artefacts are discovered that push back that current record, the disc is spectacular as it is! I find it fascinating to ponder its significance to the creator(s?) of the disc and its owners. Made from bronze & gold, the disc is about the size of dinner plate. The symbols are interpreted generally as the Sun or full moon, a lunar crescent, and stars, including a cluster of seven stars, possibly the Pleiades.'
