And has neither Macron orders ‘unprecedented’ naval deployment to Strait of Hormuz Flagship warship among French vessels sent to waterway after Iranian attacks – as No 10 suggests UK may not send aircraft carrier after all Emmanuel Macron has ordered an “unprecedented” naval deployment in the Middle East to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. France will deploy eight frigates, two amphibious helicopter carriers and the country’s flagship Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier. “We aim to guarantee freedom of navigation and maritime ‌security,” Mr Macron said during a visit to a military air base in Cyprus. Iran’s attacks in the Strait of Hormuz have all but stopped tankers from using the key shipping lane, through which a fifth of the world’s oil is carried, causing global energy prices to soar. The French vessels are expected to join US forces aiming to reopen the narrow passageway choking the world’s oil supplies.
