General Sir Richard Barrons, former Commander of Joint Forces Command, has suggested that a strike on Diego
Garcia shows Iran’s missiles are more capable than first believed.
Speaking to the Today programme, Sir Richard said: “Previously we thought Iran’s missiles had a range of 2,000km and Diego [Garcia] is 3,800km from Iran.”
It is not known which missile Iran used to target Diego Garcia.
Iran has previously boasted that newer versions of the Khorramshahr, a medium range missile with a normal operational range of 1,000 and 2,000 km, could reach Diego Garcia.
Some experts believe the Khorramshahr’s range could be extended with a smaller warhead.
