Shirley they should have swimming pools and home theatres…
Fcuk your kids, they have their priorities.
The £300k eco-friendly houses being given to migrants in a Suffolk village In a rural community where young locals struggle to join the property ladder, asylum seekers have been moved into a row of smart new homes
A handsome piebald cob is clip-clopping slowly along a Suffolk byway, hooves echoing across the common.
The briars in the hedgerows are heavy with ripe blackberries and the last cabbage whites of the summer are fluttering in the gardens of the pretty Victorian railwaymen’s cottages.
An evocation of Constable country, the scene serves as a reminder of Britain’s rural heritage, its unchanging beauty and timelessness.
Or at least it seemed unchanging. But a thoroughly contemporary controversy has blown up in recent days, casting an unwelcome spotlight onto this sleepy village.
Suffice to say that it’s so small there’s no shop or post office, although this being the British countryside, there is, of course, a pub. Situated on the main London-Norwich line, trains hurtle past at more than 100mph but the local transport links are lamentable just two buses stop here every week, leading to isolation for those without a car.
'Trains hurtle past at more than 100mph but just two buses stop here every week' Yet a heated furore over migrants has caused internal division, prompted national headlines and even, surreally, an intervention by Elon Musk.
At the centre of it all is a short row of smart new £300,000 townhouses, which, according to promotional materials put out by the housebuilder, represent a “perfect blend of modern design, comfort, and sustainability”. They are said to offer inhabitants a “serene living experience” in a “community-oriented location”.
The four eco-friendly dwellings boast underfloor heating, an EV charging point and en-suite bathrooms – luxuries well beyond the reach of young locals desperately keen to get a foot on the property ladder.
