France poised to axe free healthcare loophole for British expats Politicians have voted to close scheme for non-EU citizens to reduce country’s deficit
British expats living in France could lose access to free healthcare under plans supported by lawmakers to close a lucrative loophole.
Currently, expats who are not working but have an annual income of more than €23,000 (£20,000), private healthcare, and a long-stay visa can after three months apply for a universal health card (carte vitale) – even if they don’t pay French taxes.
Those moving to France are required to prove that they have private healthcare as part of the long-stay visitor visa process. Three months after they have moved, it is possible for them to acquire a carte vitale and cancel any private coverage.
