Not sure if it's still the case, but until quite recently, train drivers in France retired at 50.
The rule was a relic from the time when it was a very physical job, think steam trains, shovelling coal.
Of course, train driving has been a desk job for decades.
The Last Steam Train in France
The final chapter for steam locomotives in France was written on December 31, 1975. On that day, the SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français), the French national railway company, operated its last regular steam train service. The train, an iconic 141R 420 locomotive, traveled from Saint-Denis to La Villette in Paris, marking the end of an era for French railways.
