Reservoir Levels: The five main dams supplying Tehran (Lar, Latyan, Karaj/Amir Kabir, Taleqan, and Mamloo) are at extremely low capacity, averaging roughly 10%. Specifically, the Lar Dam was recently reported as nearly empty at 1% capacity.
Emergency Measures: Officials have implemented nightly water pressure reductions and are penalising "high-use" households with 12-hour cut-offs.
Evacuation Warnings: President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly stated that if rationing fails to stabilize the supply, authorities may be forced to evacuate the capital.

Factors Worsening the Crisis
War Impacts: Recent military strikes (February–March 2026) have targeted infrastructure, including electrical plants that power water pumps. A strike on 15 June 2025 in the Tajrish neighborhood also caused localized flooding and infrastructure damage.
Infrastructural Decay: Tehran's century-old water system suffers from significant leakage, losing a substantial portion of the supply before it reaches taps.
Groundwater Depletion: Excessive pumping for agriculture and urban needs has caused the ground beneath Tehran to subside by up to 25 cm per year, permanently damaging the aquifers' ability to store water”
