Joanh..
I left Britain for a new life in Morocco and I’ve never been happier Despite an unfamiliar language and Islamic traditions, the country is far cheaper than home and offers a much simpler way of life
first visited Taghazout, 10 miles north of Agadir, in 2015. I was working as a tour operator, specialising in Africa, and took a yoga and surfing trip to the coast with a friend after a conference in Marrakech. At the time, I felt like I had an amazing life: I owned a house, had a good job, a great group of friends and was happy.
But after breakfast one day, sitting reading my book on a rooftop overlooking the Atlantic, I had a pivotal moment: I needed more of this, a simpler life. This revelation was quickly followed by a barrage of questions about how I would unravel myself from what I had built in the UK.
I shed my responsibilities gradually over the next few years. I sold my house and my share in the business and, with new-found freedom, went on more surfing and yoga retreats. I took courses in pottery, painting and creative writing and then started training to be a yoga teacher.
