Can you tell me why a player on the US team was sent off yesterday
Thought for 12s
Folarin Balogun (USMNT striker) was sent off in their 2026 World Cup Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1.

In the second half (around the 61st–64th minute), after scoring the opening goal, Balogun mistimed a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic. He dragged his cleats down the back of Muharemovic’s leg and onto his foot/ankle as both players went for the ball.

The referee initially may not have seen it clearly, but VAR reviewed it and recommended a check. The referee then issued a straight red card for serious foul play (endangering an opponent), sending Balogun off and leaving the US down to 10 players.

The US still won the match and advanced, but Balogun will miss the Round of 16 vs. Belgium due to the automatic one-game suspension that comes with a red card in this competition. Many viewed the call as harsh or controversial (incidental contact while falling, with some comparing it to unpunished similar incidents), but it stood per the referee’s and VAR’s judgment.

This was the main (and only) US player sent off in that game.
