It’s the Bard
Shakespearean plays, plots, and quotes are deeply woven into the fabric of the Star Trek Official Website franchise, spanning nearly every television series and multiple feature films.

Direct Adaptations & Plot Inspirations

The Conscience of the King
Captain Kirk investigates a traveling Shakespearean troupe (performing Hamlet and Macbeth) to uncover a mass murderer from his past.
Catspaw
1978
Features floating, chanting witches and a castle layout modeled after Macbeth.
Elaan of Troyius
A sci-fi retelling of The Taming of the Shrew.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
1992·1h 50m·PG 7.3/10 · Paramount+ +6
The movie's title comes from Hamlet ("the undiscovered country, from whose bourn no traveller returns"), and the Klingon General Chang (played by Christopher Plummer) constantly quotes Shakespeare throughout the film.

Captain Picard and Shakespeare

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by renowned British Shakespearean actor Patrick Stewart) frequently quotes Shakespeare in Star Trek: The Next Generation, keeps a physical copy of the plays in his ready room, and stages performances on the holodeck.
• The franchise even introduced the running gag—and real-world tie-in—that Klingons claim Shakespeare was actually a Klingon ("Shakespeare is better in the original Klingon"). This led the Klingon Language Institute to officially translate Hamlet into the Klingon language.

Episode Titles Inspired by Shakespeare

Dozens of episode titles across the franchise are direct quotes or riffs on Shakespeare lines:
Dagger of the Mind
" (The Original Series — Macbeth)
By Any Other Name
" (The Original Series — Romeo and Juliet)
Thine Own Self
" (The Next Generation — Hamlet)
The Dogs of War
" (Deep Space Nine — Julius Caesar)
What's Past is Prologue
" (Discovery — The Tempest)
A Quality of Mercy
" (Strange New Worlds — The Merchant of Venice
