Freemasons do not control society, insists grand secretary Secretive group grants rare interview after Met Police says officers may be forced to reveal membership
The handshakes, the induction rituals and the brotherhood: the Freemasons have been shrouded in mystery for hundreds of years.
That secrecy helped give rise to the myth that the organisation controls the society. It’s not true, one of the society’s most prominent members has told the Telegraph in a rare interview.
Adrian Marsh, grand secretary of the United Grand Lodge of England, said there had long been a “sensationalised” view of the group, but that the idea that it was pulling the strings behind the scenes was based on a misunderstanding.
“There’s a massive misconception about what we’re about and how often we meet,” he said.
Public perception of the organisation was thrust into the news this week when the Metropolitan Police announced it was considering forcing officers to reveal if they were Freemasons.
