Et tu, doofus? Why the Flu Jab Cannot Cause the Flu • Inactivated viruses: Standard flu injections given to adults contain killed (inactivated) virus fragments or parts of the virus, meaning they are not alive and cannot trigger a flu infection. • Immune response: Some people experience mild, flu-like symptoms—such as a low-grade fever, tired feeling, or aching muscles—for 1 to 2 days after the shot. This is just a sign that your immune system is working and building protection, not an actual flu illness. • Time to build immunity: It takes about 10 to 14 days after getting vaccinated for your body to develop full protection. If you catch the flu virus during this window or just before getting the jab, you can still fall ill, which can make it feel like the vaccine caused it. Common vs. Serious Side Effects • Normal side effects: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, mild headache, or low-grade fever. These typically fade within 1 to 2 days. • Severe reactions: Serious reactions like a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) are very rare and trained clinic staff can treat them immediately
