Meningitis case in London as outbreak declared ‘national incident’ Health chiefs say spread of disease is ‘unprecedented explosion’
A meningitis outbreak that killed a grammar school pupil and a student has been declared a national incident.
Health officials are working to halt the spread of the disease after a case was reported in London on Tuesday, the first outside Kent, where the outbreak originated.
A sixth-form pupil called Juliette and a 21-year-old University of Kent student have already died, and a further 13 people are in hospital.
It is understood that at least 11 of these were traced to a Canterbury nightclub called Club Chemistry.
A baby is also critically ill in a Kent hospital with the disease.
Nine-month-old Nala-Rose Fletcher, from Folkestone, is being treated in intensive care at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Kent Online reported.
Her parents, Danielle Trott and Nick Fletcher, told Kent Online they had not been in Canterbury before their daughter’s illness, but it was confirmed on Tuesday that she has the same Meningitis B strain.
