One in, one out’ migrant deal set to collapse French immigration official tells The Telegraph scheme will be ‘over’ by end of October The UK’s “one in, one out” migrant deal with France is on the brink of collapse, with a senior French immigration official claiming: “It’s over.” The flights that take Channel migrants back to France will continue for another month, but the scheme is “set to end” by the end of October, the French official told The Telegraph. However, British diplomats and officials are making last-minute appeals for the deal to continue amid evidence, acknowledged by France, that it has had some deterrent effect on illegal crossings. More than 1,000 Channel migrants have been sent back to France by the UK, while a reciprocal number of legitimate asylum seekers with links to the UK have been flown to Britain from France. The deal was set to expire this summer but was extended to Oct 1 to help counter the anticipated increase in attempted crossings during the improved sea and weather conditions. However, France wants to end the scheme because it would prefer all EU countries to share the burden of taking back Channel migrants who reach the UK.
