Yours for £300,000: 260ft chimney goes up for sale Octagonal futuristic home to be built around Grade II-listed structure in Bolton
A 260ft industrial chimney has been put up for sale for £300,000 under plans to turn it into one of Britain’s most unusual homes.
Barrow Bridge Chimney, a 19th century Grade II-listed structure in Bolton, once part of a major textile works, is being put on the market with planning permission to turn it into a futuristic home.
Plans show potential for a two-story octagonal structure to be built around the chimney, 59ft above ground level.
A glass lift and six flights of stairs inside the chimney would be used to access the dwelling.
The chimney was built in 1863 to serve the Halliwell Bleach Works, which helped make Bolton a hub for textiles.
It was last used in the 1970s as part of an aluminium casting plant and has been a listed building since 1974. Steeplejack and TV personality Fred Dibnah scaled the chimney as a teenager for a 10-shilling bet.
