Portugal bans burka in public President announces measure to issue fines of up to €3,000 for wearing face coverings
Portugal has banned wearing the burka in public.
António José Seguro, the Left-wing president, announced a “burka law” this week, which prohibits the use of coverings designed to conceal the face or prevent identification in public spaces.
Anyone caught covering their face may receive a fine ranging from €150 (£129) to €3,000 (£2,600).
Exemptions will be made for health, professional, artistic or weather-related reasons, as well as face coverings in places of worship, diplomatic missions and on aircraft.
The bill also bans forcing someone to cover their face for reasons related to gender, religion, age or origin.
Called the “burka law” in Portuguese media, it is widely seen as a measure targeting Muslim women who wear veils that partially or fully cover their faces.
The bill follows similar laws enacted in France, Belgium and Austria.
