NHS set to reject ‘holy grail’ cancer test Health service to block rollout of blood test that detects four times more cases than standard screening
The NHS is set to reject a national rollout of a blood test for cancer despite it diagnosing four times as many people with the disease as standard screening.
An NHS trial of the test, which can identify more than 50 types of cancer, failed to sufficiently reduce the number of patients diagnosed with advanced cancers, which are stages three and four.
It is understood that health chiefs will not roll out the test – which has been described as “the holy grail” of cancer diagnostics – across the NHS following the findings.
The test did pick up four times as many cancer cases overall as standard NHS screening, and also reduced the number of people diagnosed at an incurable stage – known as stage four – by more than a quarter.
