Australia is banning social media for teens – will the world follow?
World-first ban on under-16s using social media kicks in on Wednesday

Across Australia, a million social media accounts are going dark.

From Wednesday, the world’s first major experiment in blocking under-16s from vast swathes of the web is getting under way.

In recent days, children across the country have woken up to notifications warning them that their accounts will be shut down until they turn 16. Already, Meta’s Instagram and Facebook have started turning off some teens’ accounts.

Despite protests from tech giants, the industry has now bowed to the measures and promised to introduce age checks that will ensure most teens are unable to access their apps.
