Friday, 2 April: Argentina invades the Falkland Islands. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher authorises the
assembly of a task force. Saturday, 3 April: Dockyards in Portsmouth, Devonport, and Gibraltar begin working 24-hour shifts. Many sailors are recalled from leave via TV and radio announcements. Monday, 5 April: Just three days after the invasion, the vanguard of the Task Force—led by the aircraft carriers HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible—sails from Portsmouth.
