Meanwhile in Ukraine…
Russia suffers deadliest day of year with 1,700 troops lost Significant casualties for Moscow’s forces in Ukraine, with drones accounting for half of them
Russia suffered its deadliest day of the year in Ukraine on Tuesday, losing more than 1,700 troops in 24 hours.
Ukraine’s general staff said it had killed or wounded 1,710 Russian troops on March 17 and destroyed 29 artillery systems as well as 230 vehicles and fuel tankers.
The unmanned systems force, which oversees Ukraine’s drone strikes, was responsible for killing or wounding 900 Russian soldiers in a day and a half, after Moscow’s forces attempted to surge forward on the Zaporizhzhia front.
Robert Brovdi, head of the Ukrainian drone unit “Magyar’s Birds”, said that the Russians had attempted to move in using infantry, motorcycles and horses under cover of fog before being wiped out.
In recent months, Russia’s average daily losses have mostly ranged between 700 and 900 troops per day. The jump may point to a fresh influx of troops as Moscow attempts to launch its long-awaited spring offensive.
US-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the war have also stalled as Washington’s focus has moved to waging war in the Middle East, Moscow said.
“The three-way group is on hold,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, told the Russian broadsheet Izvestia on Thursday.
