French Revolution changed them innit…..
Overview Understanding records from the French Revolution The 12 months of the French Republican Calendar, which was in use from 1793 to 1805, were named after natural elements and seasons to de-Christianize the calendar. The months are: Vendémiaire (vintage), Brumaire (fog), Frimaire (frost), Nivôse (snow), Pluviôse (rain), Ventôse (wind), Germinal (germination), Floréal (flowering), Prairial (meadows), Messidor (harvest), Thermidor (heat), and Fructidor (fruits). Each month had 30 days, divided into three 10-day weeks (called décades), and the year began on the autumnal equinox.
