Scientific studies and global health authorities have concluded that deaths from COVID-19 vaccines are extremely rare, and the benefits of vaccination in preventing severe illness and death from COVID-19 infection vastly outweigh the risks.
Confirmed Deaths
A causal link between vaccination and death has been established in a very small number of cases, with specific causes identified in clinical and autopsy studies:
Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT): This condition has been identified as a cause of death, primarily associated with the adenovirus vector vaccines (such as the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccines), not the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna).
Myocarditis: While myocarditis (heart inflammation) is a rare side effect of mRNA vaccines, most cases are mild and resolve quickly. Studies of death certificates and medical records have found no association between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden cardiac death among previously healthy young persons.
Autopsy Studies: A nationwide analysis in Finland of all medicolegal autopsies found that in only 12 cases out of 9.8 million doses administered was the vaccine considered a potential underlying or contributory cause of death, mostly due to thromboembolism.
Monitoring and Reporting Systems
Systems like the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) in the United States and EudraVigilance in Europe collect reports of any adverse health event that occurs after vaccination.
Reports do not equal causation: These systems are designed as early warning tools, and anyone can submit a report, regardless of whether the vaccine actually caused the event. A review of available clinical information, including death certificates and autopsy results, has not established a causal link for the vast majority of reported deaths.
Benefits vs. Risks: Public health experts consistently state that the data show no increased risk of death from the vaccines. Instead, multiple large-scale studies have confirmed that the vaccines significantly reduced death rates from COVID-19 itself, preventing millions of deaths globally.
