Cheers. It's been a long time since I've recorded a tape and got sound much nicer then the CD i've just
recorded from (the Awai, 1990)
Just looking into uk wages as the Pinoeer cost 600usd in 79. In UK I reckon 750 £ just because that's the way it was. smealler market etc.
I type in average weekly wage in 1979 I get 69 quid I alter only the year to 2025 and get an annual figure, 31,461
If we divide that by 52 we get 605 a week.
A near 10 fold increase although net would be less.
So the Pioneer would be about 8k today. Which makes sense. If the Japanese were to reintroduce audiophile level cassette decks there would a) be a massive market for it and b) prices would indeed be around the 8k mark. Call it 6,800 for cash, and 5,500 USD.
So it's no surprise that it sounds brilliant as you get what you pay for., but it is surprising how all the components (apart from consumables like the belts, a tired spring and a motor that just needed contact cleaning operates flawlessly47 years after it left the test bench in Tokyo.
side note, in the vein of reel to reel you don't need to bother with Dolby B as there's 'no tape hiss'.
