By "normal IP address" I assume that you mean the LAN address.
Why do you find this "odd"? When you install your VPN software a new, default network connection is created with its default gateway pointing at the VPN server. Thus all traffic, even for LAN addresses, is directed to your VPN server.
Have you not had connection problems with other LAN devices, such as other computers, printers, webcams, etc.?
You can configure OpenVPS, Wireguard, etc. (and software using them, such as NordVPN, Proton VPN, etc.) not to route LAN traffic over the default gateway.
