Infantino faces investigation into entire Uefa career after ‘lover’ paid off European football body’s leading figures want to examine how settlement came about and whether alleged affair affected staff decisions Uefa is considering launching an investigation into Gianni Infantino’s conduct throughout the entirety of his 16 years at the organisation after revelations that his alleged lover was paid off. The Telegraph disclosed how a woman received a six-figure sum after an alleged relationship with Mr Infantino while he was a top official at European football’s governing body. The newly revealed circumstances and payments have caused considerable concern at Uefa’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, and there is a push among senior figures for a full investigation into Mr Infantino’s spell there. It is understood that those at Uefa want to know exactly how the payments came about and whether the alleged relationship affected staff decisions while he was general secretary. They also want Mr Infantino’s conduct in his wider tenure to be examined. Mr Infantino joined Uefa in 2000 and spent 16 years there before leaving in 2016 to replace Sepp Blatter as head of Fifa, where he is now fighting for his future. Aleksander Ceferin replaced Mr Infantino as Uefa president in 2016 and his modernised organisation has since led the backlash to a World Cup financing proposal that would have resulted in a group of investors controlling the tournament’s commercial interests. The woman, whom The Telegraph has chosen not to name, is alleged to have been promoted at Uefa by Mr Infantino during their relationship, progressing from a junior position to a more lucrative managerial role with a 30 per cent pay increase. Her rapid rise is said to have caused significant internal disquiet, although the details of the subsequent pay-off were previously understood to have been largely unknown.
